Our Story and Team
Every child who goes to camp deserves to go home safe
Camp is unlike almost any other childhood experience. Children live away from home, often for the first time. They swim, climb, ride, and canoe in unfamiliar places. That mix of adventure and challenge is exactly what makes camp transformative, and exactly what creates real risk.
Origin Story
Why we exist
IMPACT
On the morning of July 4, 2025, the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country rose more than twenty-five feet in under an hour. Catastrophic floods swept through Central Texas that day, killing more than 135 people across the region. At Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp that had welcomed generations of children, the floodwaters arrived in the dark while campers slept. Twenty-seven campers and counselors died.
In the months that followed, the girls' parents turned their grief into advocacy, working with Texas lawmakers to pass new camp safety legislation. Watching them fight for change is what led us to build The Safety Navigator.
Turning that legislation into day-to-day implementation at camps is its own challenge. The camp community cares deeply about the children in its care. That was never the problem. The problem is access. Good safety planning takes expertise, time, and money, and large, well-resourced camps can afford dedicated safety support while small and mid-sized camps are largely on their own. Meanwhile, state requirements are expanding, insurers are tightening standards, and weather patterns are shifting. Most camps have had to navigate all of it alone.
So we built the thing we wished existed: the first comprehensive, free, tech-enabled safety platform for the camp industry. We take real safety expertise from high-hazard industries and translate it into practical tools any camp can use, regardless of size, budget, or accreditation: training, risk assessment, templates, a curated vendor directory, and a community of peers, not just emergency planning. No jargon, no cost, no assumption that you already know how any of this works.
We are not a regulator, a consultant, or an accreditation body. We do not charge camps to use the platform, and we do not tell camps what to do. We give them the knowledge, tools, and community to figure it out themselves.
What Guides Everything We Build
PRINCIPLES BEHIND EVERYTHING WE BUILD
These three principles guide everything we build, for camps, partners, and our own team alike.
1
Free, always
Cost is the primary barrier for small and mid-sized camps. If we charged, the camps that need us most would not use us. So the platform is free, and it will stay that way.
2
Practical over perfect
The average camp director is not a safety professional, and they should not have to be. Everything we make is built to be used without specialist expertise. A good template used consistently beats a perfect framework that never gets implemented.
3
Support, not certification
We are not a regulator or an accreditation body. We do not certify or grade camps. We build capability, because compliance creates a floor, and capability creates a culture.

A quick look at how we got here
We are a young organization moving quickly, and we are honest about being a work in progress. Here is the road so far.
2025
The Safety Navigator is founded in late 2025 by Charlee, Marley & Ted,
2026
The Safety Navigator Platform launches in February 2026, built to help camps prepare for the 2026 season.
2026
822 people join the platform in the first season, reaching an estimated 404,000 children.
today
67 free safety resources available, more than $232,000 in safety grants facilitated, and a growing community of camp leaders.
2029
Our goal: 7,500 camps on the platform and nearly 9.7 million children reached.
Leadership
MEET OUR TEAM
Our team brings hands-on experience across the areas that matter most to our mission: camp director experience, strategy, innovation, technology, and commercial execution.
We blend expertise from high-risk industries like oil and gas and mining with real experience inside the camp industry itself.
